How do online casinos really work?

Before you play — it's worth knowing what happens behind the scenes. Casinos CANNOT tamper with the games, and there's no „magic button” they can press against you. Everything you need to know — short and clear.

1. The casino DOES NOT build the games

Many players believe that the casino „adjusts” the slot or the roulette outcome. This is a myth. A casino is just a platform — the games are made by independent software providers (e.g. NetEnt, Pragmatic Play, Evolution, Play'n GO, Hacksaw, Nolimit City, Microgaming).

The casino only licenses the games — just like a cinema doesn't film the movies but rents them from distributors. They cannot modify a single character of the game's code: doing so would instantly cost them their license and operating permit.

2. RNG — Random Number Generator

Every online slot, roulette wheel or card draw is based on an algorithm called RNG (Random Number Generator). It is a mathematical random number generator that produces thousands of numbers per second — even when nobody is playing.

When you press Spin, the RNG picks a number at that millisecond — that determines the outcome. Neither the casino nor the provider can predict the result in advance. The algorithm is continuously audited by independent firms (eCOGRA, iTechLabs, GLI).

3. RTP — Return to Player

RTP (Return to Player) is a percentage showing how much a game pays back to players over the long term. For example, a 96% RTP means that for every €100 wagered, an average of €96 is returned to players collectively — measured over millions of spins.

Important: this does NOT mean YOU will get exactly €96 back! In one session you might win big, in another you might lose everything. RTP is a statistical average, not an individual guarantee.

Where to check it? In every serious slot, the „i” (info) icon shows the RTP. Good slots are 95–98%. Avoid anything below 92%.

4. Volatility (variance)

Volatility tells you how often and how big a slot pays:

🟢 Low volatility: frequent but small wins (e.g. Starburst, Sweet Bonanza base game) — you stay entertained longer, but huge wins are rare.

🟠 Medium: a balance between the two (e.g. Gates of Olympus).

🔴 High volatility: pays rarely, but when it does — massive wins (e.g. Dead or Alive 2, Wanted Dead or a Wild, Tombstone RIP). Expect long „dry spells”.

5. House Edge

House Edge = 100% − RTP. This is the casino's long-term profit. On a 96% RTP slot, the house edge is 4%.

This does NOT mean you lose 4% of every bet. You might win €500 in one session or lose €200 the next. Only over an extremely long term (billions of spins) does this ratio average out.

Table games: Blackjack ~0.5–1% house edge (the best), European Roulette 2.7%, American Roulette 5.26% (avoid the 0/00 American variant!).

6. Live casino — real dealers

Live casino does not use RNG — it uses real dealers streamed live from a studio (e.g. Evolution, Pragmatic Live, Playtech). Even here, only the provider controls the game — never the casino.

Multiple cameras, projectors, optical card readers (OCR) and independent supervisors ensure fair play. Many players say this is the most authentic experience.

7. Licenses — who regulates them?

A casino needs an operating license. The most reputable ones:

🇲🇹 MGA (Malta) — Gold standard: strict, player-friendly rules, detailed audits.

🇬🇧 UKGC (UK): one of the world's strictest licenses.

🇨🇼 Curaçao eGaming: widespread, fast to obtain, but less strict.

🇬🇮 Gibraltar, 🇮🇲 Isle of Man: also reputable.

What does a license guarantee? That the casino pays out, games are certified, complaints are resolved by a regulator, and player funds are kept in a segregated account.

8. KYC & Anti-Money-Laundering

Before paying out a larger amount, the casino requires identity verification (KYC = Know Your Customer): ID, address proof, possibly a selfie with the ID. This is NOT extortion — it is required by law (AML — Anti-Money-Laundering).

You only need to do it once — after that, payouts are faster. Do it right after your first deposit, so there's no surprise after a big win!

9. Bonuses — the fine print

„100% bonus up to €500” sounds great, but every bonus comes with wagering requirements (WR). This means you have to wager the bonus and/or deposit X times before withdrawing.

Example: €100 bonus, 35x WR = you must wager €3,500. Typical values: 25x–50x. Below 30x is very fair.

Tips: check max bet/spin while playing with the bonus (often €5), game contributions (slots 100%, tables only 10%), and bonus expiry time.

10. Responsible gaming — the most important

No casino wins against every player, but statistically, the house edge always prevails over the long term. Therefore:

💰 Only stake what you can afford to lose.

⏰ Set time limits and deposit limits (every serious casino has these).

🚫 Never chase losses („I'll definitely win it back now” — you WON'T, you'll just lose more).

🆘 If it slips out of control: use self-exclusion to lock yourself out. Help: begambleaware.org
